PRESIDENT BUHARI CONGRATULATES OBASEKI, OSHIOMHOLE ON VICTORY AT POLLS

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja congratulated the government and people of Edo State on the successful conclusion of the gubernatorial election, and the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Godwin Obaseki at the polls.  In a telephone call to Governor Adams Oshomole, President Buhari commended the well-articulated campaign programme of the APC in the state, the doggedness of the governor, governor-elect and party members in going round the state to reach the people with records of good governance over the years and a promise of continuity.  According to the President, the outcome of the election clearly reflected the mood of the people to sustain the pedigree of responsiveness, forthrightness and diligence that Governor Oshomole brought into the service of his people.  ‘‘The victory is good for democracy, for Nigeria and the people of Edo State,’’ he said.  President Buhari said the victory was well-deserved as the campaig...

Wike, Fayose ‘ll ruin PDP, not APC, not Sheriff says Bode George

Image
Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Olabode George yesterday said the party was in ruins and imminent danger. Addressing a conference at the Lagos PDP secretariat, George’s Political Adviser, Mr. Uthman Shodipe-Dosunmu said Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose were bent in destroying the party. He said the August 17 convention would have divided the party more, stressing that the convention was hijacked by the two governors to prosecute their 2019 ambitions. George said: “This is indeed a sad period for the PDP; the sky is dark and bleak. The party is now at the edge of a cliff, dangling before imminent ruins and forfeiture. Our party has lost its soul, its fundamental defining logic of existence, stripped of all values of justice, fairness and equity. “We thought that the crisis provoked by the issue of Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff would be finally laid to rest after the August 17 convention, but we couldn’...

Wike, Fayose Should Own Up To The Gamble On PDP – APC

Image
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has advised Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike and his Ekiti State counterpart, Mr Ayo Fayose to own up to their gamble on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This is as the party urged Wike to stop accusing the Nigerian Police of sealing off the proposed venue of the botched national convention of the PDP, recalling that as governorship candidate, he led soldiers to forcefully take over the Adokie Amesiamaka Stadium in the state. APC, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by its state’s publicity secretary, Senibo Chris Finebone, also advised Wike and Fayose to apologise to PDP members for imposing Senator Ali Modu Sheriff on them. It said, “On PDP’s botched national convention, the APC calls on Governor Nyesom Wike to own up to the gamble he and his Man Friday, Governor Ayo Fayose pulled on their party. They should apologise to their party members for imposing Ali Modu Sheriff on them and stop blam...

RIVERS PDP COURT ORDER IS SUSPECT AND MEANINGLESS--APC

Image
Our reaction to the PDP purported court order against the release of Tai rerun election results by INEC is that it is not of any consequence if any person or political party decides to embark on an ego trip using the courts. In any case, the Electoral Act 2010, Section 133 sub 1 forbids any courts from questioning INEC in any manner other than by petition complaining of an undue election or undue return presented to competent tribunal or court. Definitely, the Federal High Court the PDP purportedly obtained its order does not qualify to issue such an order on INEC. It is indeed a meaningless court order as far as the APC is concerned. The APC cannot be distracted by the antics of the PDP as we prepare for the conclusion of the remaining rerun elections as will be announced by the INEC. Chris Finebone State Publicity Secretary

4,536 PDP members defect to APC in Edo

Image
A total of 4,536 aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, South-South Nigeria decamped to the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday. Leader of the defectors, Mr. Promise Igbinevbo, who spoke on behalf of the others said the PDP had deceived them over the years and that the party was yet to shed its old ways in spite of attempts to rebrand it. He said: “We are here to bury PDP today. We were deceived by some political leaders of the PDP all these years. Today, they call them new PDP but I realized that old PDP remains. I later realized that they are like the leopard which doesn’t change its skin. “PDP leaders are conservatives. PDP leaders cry for their parochial interest alone to the detriment of their followers.” According to him, “I have wiped off my tears because of the belief that I have in democracy. In democracy, it is said that the minority will have their say while the majority will have their way. Today, t...

APC TO PDP: YOU LACK MORAL BASIS TO COMMENT ON NIGERIAN ECONOMY

Image
The People's Democratic Party (PDP), which brought Nigeria to its present situation after 16 years of locust, lacks the moral basis and the credibility to comment on the country's economy or condemn a government that is working hard to clear the mess left behind by the disgraced former ruling party, according to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun. In a statement issued by his Media Office in Abuja on Thursday, the National Chairman said it is stomach-churning and downright immoral for the ruinous PDP, which has yet to show remorse or exhibit any form of penitence for presiding over the mindless looting of the nation's treasury, to now put itself up as the saviour of Nigerians. Noting that even among thieves, there must be honour, the Chairman said Nigerians, who are now bearing the brunt of the economy that was mindlessly mismanaged by the PDP, cannot forget in a hurry that some $15 billion - which is about half of the nati...

APC wants PDP dead – Fayose

Image
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) wants the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dead because the APC does not want a virile opposition to challenge its obnoxious policies and inability to tackle the problems confronting the country. Speaking in Port Harcourt on Wednesday on the sideline of the national convention of the PDP, Mr. Fayose said such a development would not, however, be in the interest of the country and Nigerians at large. In a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor was quoted as saying that a virile opposition was a vital ingredient for democracy and necessary to make democracy thrive. Mr. Fayose, who could not attend the convention owing to the blockade of the road leading to the Old Presidential Lodge of the Rivers State government house where he was accommodated, said the condoning off of the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt by the police on the orders of the Inspector Ge...

PDP Convention Is A Big Joke - Sheriff

Image
The factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen Ali Modu Sheriff, has described the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the PDP which extended the tenure of the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee by one year. He said, the said meeting was in breach of Section 31 (4) of the PDP Constitution, which makes the National Chairman the sole authority with a mandate to convene the NEC. Sheriff said INEC has not been put on the mandatory three weeks’ notice, neither has he as Chairman been put on one week notice, even if it was an emergency. He also called on members of PDP to disregard everything that may have taken place in Port Harcourt, as everything purported to have been done was in gross violation of a court order. He further maintained that the Caretaker Committee does not exist in law, therefore, “Makarfi should stop parading himself as a PDP official”. The PDP extended the tenure of the Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee for one year after a vote o...

Failed PDP convention :APC, Buhari Not to blame- Doyin Okupe

Image
The failed Pdp convention cannot and should not be blamed on our political adversaries. Rather the blame should rest squarely on the failure of internal conflict resolution machinery of the Pdp, the surprising naivety and desperation of many to seize power and control the party, and the gullibility of majority of the followership, who have become entrenched in the cesspool of pervasive impunity of our leadership over the years. However it is commendable that the NEC threw sentiments aside and extended the tenure of the controversial caretaker commuter by one year and allowed for future expansion of the membership of the committee. The import of this is that the party has now officially jetissoned the “Microwave”strategy, hitherto, employed by the leadership, and allowed for ample time to address all issues. By allowing for new inclusions into the members of the caretaker committee, the leadership obviously has made room for possible reasonable negotiation with the Senator Amodu She...

Police seal off venue of PDP’s convention venue

Image
The Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State venue of today’s National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been sealed off by a combined team of security personnel from the police and Department of State Services (DSS), among others. The Rivers Commissioner of Police, Francis Mobolaji Odesanya, said through the telephone that: “We are obeying court order.” It was gathered that policemen and other security operatives moved to the sharks stadium at the old Port Harcourt Township, popularly called Town, as early as 4 a.m. today, to prevent the breakdown of law and order. Sharks stadium was ready last night, while the Outside Broadcasting (OB) vans of the Africa Independent Television (AIT), Channels Television and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) were mounted yesterday evening and early this morning, but the security men asked the teams to quickly vacate the stadium, while journalists who got to the venue as early as 6 a.m., were ordered to immediately l...

PDP convention: We don’t know which judge to obey, says INEC

Image
The leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday was confused on whether to monitor or stay away from Wednesday’s (today) national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday had insisted that the PDP must stop its planned national convention. The judge gave a stern warning to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahood Yakubu, not to monitor the convention. The judge also ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to enforce the court’s order. Justice Abang’s order is contrary to another order by Justice Ibrahim Watila of the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court, directing the IGP to monitor the convention. Warning that the disobedience of court orders could cause anarchy, Justice Watila pointed out that the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP remained the executive authority in all matters concerning the party. Our correspondent, who...

Court stops PDP convention, threatens to jail caretaker members

Image
A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fixed for Port Harcourt tomorrow. Justice Okon Abang also ordered the endorsement of Form 48 contempt proceedings to be attached with the order against the caretaker committee members, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC) and the Inspector General of Police. The judge warned the caretaker committee members particularly Senator Ben Obi and Dayo Adeyeye over their acts of disparaging the court. He held that the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court which made an interim injunction allowing the Wednesday August 17 convention to hold, lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the matter because both the PDP and INEC are in Abuja. The judge restrained INEC from monitoring the convention as well as the PDP from submitting any lists of elected officials to INEC.

Image
Jimoh Ibrahim who purchased his gubernatorial form under the People’s Democratic Party factional leader, Ali Modu Sheriff has been rejected by the other faction in the ruling political party in the Sunshine State. The party crisis at the national level seems to have been extended to the state level with fears that it could affect the November 26 election. While the governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has pitched his tent with the Senator Ahmed Makarfi faction in the state; a business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim belongs to the Ali Modu Sheriff camp. Three aspirants including Ibrahim and two immediate past commissioners under the Mimiko administration, Messrs Sola Ebiseni and Bamiduro Dada have obtained nomination forms from Sheriff’s camp, while two in the Mimiko camp- Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, and Saka Lawal have approached the Makarfi faction for their nomination forms as at the close of the sales on Tuesday. PDP Crisis: Sheriff Gives Condition For Peace, Says Wike Must Not Head Convention Committee

Image
Attempt by the Board of trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party to broker peace between Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and the National Caretaker Committee of the party met a brick wall Wednesday as he insisted that for peace to return to the party, the proposed NATIONAL CONVENTION SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 17 IN PORT HARCOURT SHOULD BE PUT OFF, AND THE CARE TAKER COMMITTEE DISSOLVED TO ALLOW FOR A FRESH START. Sheriff who met with the caretaker committee on Tuesday Night also insisted that the New Convention Which He Is Proposing Must Be Held In ABUJA And The Governor Of Rivers State, NYESOM WIKE Should Not Head The CONVENTION COMMITTEE. Recall that a reconciliation committee headed by former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana was empanelled and inaugurated last Monday by the BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin to find political solution to the lingering crisis.

FULL TEXT OF DISTINGUISHED SENATOR MAGNUS NGEI ABE'S SPEECH ON THE OCCASION OF NDPM's SOLIDARITY VISIT TO HIM

Image
Ladies and gentlemen, let me very sincerely welcome you to my humble home. I am always very happy to see young people taking an interest in what is going on around them. People always think of progress in terms of big events, but progress is actually a culmination of little things that everybody is doing. Where everybody is doing little things and those little things are negative, the society moves backwards. Where everybody is struggling to do positive things, however little, every little step counts in moving the society forward. The cataclysmic events, the big men taking decisions to move the world in one direction or the other is important, but ultimately, those things don't decide in which direction the world would move. It is the little things that are done by everybody that overcome the big things that people try to do. So when I see young people take an interest in their environment, take active part in what is happening around you, make effort to move the world in the ...

Buhari to probe budget padding scandal, constituency projects

Image
The Federal Government reacted yesterday to the budget padding row in the House of Representatives, promising to probe the allegation and other related cases over the years. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN) said the government would “take action” based on the probe outcome. This indicates that the probe may be extended to the administrations of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the late President Umaru Yar’Adua and former President Goodluck Jonathan. Malami also said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari would probe executive and legislative conspiracy on constituency projects. Malami, who spoke with our correspondent, said the government’s action on padding would lead to the blocking of fraudulent leakages. He said: “We will investigate the executive and legislative conspiracy as it relates to constituency projects with a view to measuring the art of execution of the padded projects over the years “In so doing, we wil...

Bayelsa has nothing to show for Jonathan's six years presidency - APC

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) in Bayelsa State yesterday asked the Bayelsa State governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson to show case the benefits derived by the state under the six years rule of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as President. The party blasts the governor for mocking the APC over attraction of development to the state under the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. According to the APC, though the mockery of the leaders of the APC over their inability to draw from the power of the party at the centre and bring federal appointments and projects to the state is considered mischievous and reckless, the APC, and indeed the generality of Bayelsans, considered both Jonathan and the PDP as liabilities to the people of the state. The APC leaders , in a statement issued yesterday via email and signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Fortune Panebi, lamented that both the immediate past president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and his party, the PDP ,were liabilitie...
