Workers Angry With Buhari Over “May Day” Absence, FG Ignores N56,000 Minimum Wage Proposal

Image
The Federal Government on Sunday kept mum over the recent demand by the organised labour for a new minimum wage of N56,000. The issue of the minimum wage was not mentioned by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari, at the May Day rally in Abuja. Officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress expressed disappointment at the failure of the President to personally attend the annual event which would have given him the opportunity to address some of the issues raised by the workers. For instance, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Alhaji Ibrahim Khaleel, who doubles as the National Treasurer of the NLC, said that the President’s absence was a minus as he missed the opportunity to hear directly from the workers. He said that Buhari would have had the opportunity to directly respond to the workers who believed in his cause as President. The last time the President openly identified with labour union

Blame Oil Firms For Pipeline Attacks — Tompolo

Image
A former Niger Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), has urged security agencies to investigate activities of oil companies in Niger Delta for the spate of attacks on pipelines and oil facilities in the region. Reacting to insinuations that he was behind the Niger Delta Avengers, a group which claimed responsibility for the attacks on key oil facilities, including the Forcados Crude Export line in Burutu, Delta State, Tompolo said oil servicing companies angling for the repair contracts, and not him, were responsible for the attacks. In a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, Tompolo assured that oil multinationals and their service firms had nothing to worry about him because he was reformed. He said: “I wish to appeal to the servicing companies to go about their normal operations, particularly the repair of the Forcados 48-inch pipeline, which is key to our economic stability.” “I have said I will not resort to violence because of my case with the Economic

Kogi Sues National Assembly, AGF Over Assembly Takeover

Image
The Kogi State Government has sued the National Assembly and the Attorney General of the Federation at the Supreme Court, asking for an order nullifying the House of Representatives resolution to take over the legislative functions of the state’s House of Assembly. The House of Representatives had, on March 9, 2016, passed a resolution to take over the legislative functions of the Kogi State House of Assembly. The House passed the resolution following the crisis that broke out as a result of the tussle for the speakership of the House between two factions of the Assembly. In the said resolution, the Reps directed the Inspector-General of Police to seal off the House of Assembly until the crisis was resolved. But the Kogi State Government, represented by the state’s Attorney General and the House of Assembly, filed its suit on April 29, 2016, before the Supreme Court to challenge the House of Representatives resolution. The National Assembly and the AGF are the two defendants in the sui

$15bn Arms Scandal: Presidential Panel Uncovers Massive Fraud In Army

Image
The presidential panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari through the Office of the National Security Adviser to probe arms procurement between 2007 and 2015 has allegedly uncovered massive fraud in the Nigerian Army. It will be recalled that the panel had, so far, submitted two reports on its probe to the President. While the first interim report was submitted in November 2015, the second report was submitted in January following which Buhari ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate 18 serving and retired military officers, mainly from the Air Force. According to PUNCH ’s investigation on Sunday, the panel, which has Air Vice Marshal J. O. Ode (retd.) as its chairman, was concluding work on the probe of the Army. It was gathered that part of the panel’s discovery was that the total amount involved in arms fraud was $15bn and not $2.1bn. O n Wednesday last week, it was reported that $15bn arms funds were diverted by top military officers. According to the r

He said, “As newly wedded couples, you must love each other just as Christ Jesus loved the church and died to set souls free. “You must respect each other’s feelings; care for each other, share views and reason together in peace and unity. “You must not allow a third party to come into your matter; always invite God to intervene in your case. “Ensure that you are coordinated in all your dealings and make the word of God your standard, your pillar, your faith and your hope. “If you can keep these entire commandments, your marriage will be perfect and other couples will want to copy from you,’’ he said. Image
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has decided to send evidence linking former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to the $115million (N23, 299,705,000billion)  poll bribe  to the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK. The commission  also yesterday grilled and detained an oil chief, Leno Olaitan Adesanya, in connection with the ongoing probe of the bribe given to some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Adesanya allegedly contributed $1.85million to the bribe sum of $115million. The commission has, however, watch-listed others at airports, seaports and border posts because they have not responded to the commission’s invitation. But the EFCC was still keeping in custody the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, and the bank’s Head of Operations, Martin Izuogbe, as at press time. ARTICLE: A CHAMELEONIC and MEALY-MOUTHED OPPORTUNIST By ITA AWAK

In the somewhat warped opinion of Mr. Onofiok Luke, the current Speaker in the PDP dominated Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the APC government of President Muhammadu Buhari at the centre  has, in the last eleven months, fostered on our country what he describes as "apparent misgovernment." According to the Premium Times of Friday, 29th April, 2016, Mr. Luke spewed out this wholly incongruent, rascally and irresponsible opinion when he was addressing members of the Young Lawyers’ Forum of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, who had congregated in Uyo for a summit. As it is in the character of unscrupulous PDP thugs and leaders all over the country, Onofiok Luke conveniently avoided to furnish his audience with a scintilla of fact or give a known example of Buhari’s "misgovernment" in the last eleven months. In his opinion, when things were wrong in the last eight years, "we had senior lawyers who would hit the streets shouting and making demands in the name of

Oshiomhole’s Deputy Escapes Assassination

It was gathered that a policeman, an operative of the Department of State Security and three other persons were injured during the attack and were taken to an undisclosed hospital. Odubu had last Wednesday formally declared his intention to contest the September 10 gubernatorial election in the state under the All Progressives Congress amidst wide speculation that his decision did not go down well with Governor Adams Oshiomhole. It was learnt that the former lawmaker had earlier been denied access to the party’s secretariat in Fugar, allegedly on the instruction of an official at the Government House. Odubu was expected to meet with party delegates from the area but met the secretariat locked. The situation was said to have angered some delegates, who later forced the gate open to enable the deputy governor meet with them. He was s

Sheriff Moves To Amend PDP Constitution Ahead Of Convention

Image
Following stiff opposition by the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party to his desire to contest the chairmanship of the party at its national convention scheduled for May 21, the National Chairman of the party, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff has begun moves to checkmate it. Sheriff had proposed an amendment to the party’s constitution, whereby he added a clause that the body would need to consult him before it could call for any meeting. Unlike before, the BoT, of which the national chairman is a member, does not need his permission to hold its meeting. It is a statutory organ of the party with powers to act as its conscience. However, in the proposed amendment, which was meant to be discussed at the last meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee, Sheriff is proposing that he needed to be consulted before such organ of the party could meet. Under PART 1X, Board of Trustees, Meetings of the BoT, the proposed amendment says that “The BoT shall meet at the instance of the Ch

Image
Kinsmen of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday warned the Peoples Democratic Party and the National Assembly not to damage the integrity of the minister over the alleged non-inclusion of the Lagos-Calabar Railway project in the 2016 Budget. The relatives of the former governor of Rivers State, who came together under the aegis of Concerned All Progressives Congress Members, explained that the saga was a blackmail to smear Amaechi’s image. The APC members from Ikwere Local Government Area of the state also drummed support for the minister, stating that Amaechi has always maintained a high sense of responsibility in public offices. Speaking with journalists, the spokesman of the group, Mr. Kerian Wobodo, said the target of the National Assembly and the PDP was to paint the minister in bad light before the world. Wobodo noted that there was no way the minister would try to mislead the public, adding that his legacies while he was governor placed him (Amaechi) i
