Super Eagles Land In Egypt, Train In Alexandria Ahead Of Today's Match

The Pharaohs of Egypt will be in for a shocker when it faces Super Eagles team later today in the second leg of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Alexandria.

According to tough talking members of the Nigerian squad, including technical director, Shaibu Amodu, the team is set to invoke the spirit of victory that helped it triumph over Kenya in 2009 on its home ground at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi in their crucial 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reports that team captain, John Mikel Obi, who alongside Elderson Echiejile, are the only surviving members from the 2009 squad that defeated Kenya in Nairobi in a must-win game to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, recalls the Nairobi situation and is ready to repeat the sweet history.

“We are in the same situation now as we were then going to Nairobi. I just have it in my mind that it can be done, that we have done it before.

“Yes, we will go out there on Tuesday night and do exactly what we have to do: fight. It is not going to be easy but I keep remembering what we did in Nairobi that evening and I know it can be done.”

NFF technical director, Shuaibu Amodu, who was chief coach of the national team to Nairobi at that historic moment seven years ago has already started invoking the spirit in the players, according to the NFF report on its official website on Tuesday morning.

“I also remember Nairobi, and I have already discussed it with Mikel (Obi) and he remembers very well and the spirit is there and he will pass it on to the other players.

“We just have to remember that it has been done before and that we can do it again. Of course, that was a FIFA World Cup qualifier and this one is an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. But the same principle can be applied and Nigeria will come out victorious,” Amodu was quoted as saying.

The Eagles arrived in Alexandria, venue of today’s match aboard an ARIK Air aircraft and landed at the Borg El-Arab Airport, Alexandria at 6.35pm Egypt time on Monday (5.35pmNigeria time).

According to the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa and NFF President Amaju Pinnick led the delegation that included 25 players and technical/backroom staff, NFF 1st Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi, a few NFF Board members, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, some members of the National Assembly, a number of NFF Management and Secretariat staff, a couple of NFF Congressmen, some stakeholders and a number of media representatives.

The delegation was met on arrival by officials of the Embassy of Nigeria in Egypt, led by Ambassador Mohammed Maccido, and including Ado Yakassi (Consul) and finance officer Esther Akinteru.

Oil Firms Not Paying Accurate Dues To NDDC – Semenitari

The acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, on Thursday told the joint National Assembly Committee on Niger Delta that all the oil firms operating in the oil-rich region were not fully complying with the law in their remittances to the commission. The NDDC Act mandates the oil firms to pay three per cent of their annual budget to the commission which is expected to utilise same to carry out its mandate in the region. But Semenitari lamented before the Senate and the House of Representatives’ joint committees at an interactive session that the oil firms were just remitting whatever they like to the commission from inception. She stated that the NDDC did not have access to the annual budget of the firms and therefore urged the National Assembly to assist the commission to get the fiscal document from the firms so that the agency would be able to receive the accurate remittances due to it.
