Britain Mocks Nigerian Football Fans Over Super Eagles

English media on Saturday lampooned Nigerian fans who trooped to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna to watch the Super Eagles take on the Pharaohs of Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2017 qualifying match on Friday.

Reports in top British tabloid, Daily Mail UK and Daily Mirror UK mocked Super Eagles fans that too many of them packed themselves into a stadium that was way too small for them.

In a report titled ‘Nigeria Vs Egypt watched by 40,000 fans in 25,000 capacity stadium’, Mirror wrote, “A reported 40,000 spectators crammed into a 25,000 capacity stadium on Friday to see Nigeria take on Egypt in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

“Supporters were seen on the top of the scoreboard and floodlights as fans descended on the ground.”

The Daily Mail had a similar report which also hinted at the seeming poor choice of Alex Iwobi after deciding to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria rather than the Three Lions of England.

“Arsenal star Alex Iwobi made his debut, despite a last-ditch attempt by the FA to keep him available for England.
“He has made 14 Arsenal appearances this season and marked his first Premier League start with his first goal for the club at Everton,” Mirror reported.

Meanwhile, in a show of the team’s support for all its fans, no matter who they are, erstwhile Super Eagles captain and CSKA Moscow of Russia attacker, Ahmed Musa posed for pictures with a popular fan, Abubakar Gurudu, who is a person living with disability.

Oil Firms Not Paying Accurate Dues To NDDC – Semenitari

The acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, on Thursday told the joint National Assembly Committee on Niger Delta that all the oil firms operating in the oil-rich region were not fully complying with the law in their remittances to the commission. The NDDC Act mandates the oil firms to pay three per cent of their annual budget to the commission which is expected to utilise same to carry out its mandate in the region. But Semenitari lamented before the Senate and the House of Representatives’ joint committees at an interactive session that the oil firms were just remitting whatever they like to the commission from inception. She stated that the NDDC did not have access to the annual budget of the firms and therefore urged the National Assembly to assist the commission to get the fiscal document from the firms so that the agency would be able to receive the accurate remittances due to it.
